Borated graphite cathodes for low-temperature aluminum electrolysis

Electrochemical boriding of the graphite plates in potassium cryolite based electrolytes was studied. The were carried out a cell with vertical electrodes. procedure included 2 stages: 1) electrolysis KF–AlF3–KBF4 melt (CR=1.3) at low current density (0.01–0.02 A/cm2), required for boron reduction, 700 and 750 °C; 2) KF–AlF3–Al2O3 higher (0.2 aluminum reduction. optimal conditions electrodeposition obtaining borated wettable cathodes determined. According to SEM data, continuous AlB2 layer thickness 7–10 μm formed on surface. tested as wetted cathode during low-temperature electrolysis. Prolonged anode KF–NaF(10 wt.%)–AlF3–Al2O3 electrolyte (CR=1.5) 830 °C. After 100 h electrolysis, surface 5 μm, while completely aluminum. Thus, we demonstrated feasibility using dripping cell.

Ultrathin crystalline ZrO(2) nanofilms have been facilely deposited on LiMn(2)O(4) particles at 120 °C using atomic layer deposition. The ZrO(2) coating shows high crystallinity, conformality and homogeneity, which contribute to considerably improved electrochemical performance of LiMn(2)O(4) at elevated temperature in lithium-ion batteries.
